Importance of the Puja in the Saturday Shani Sade Sati Special Mahamuhurat
According to Vedic Jyotish, the lord and master of Saturday is Shani Dev himself. It is believed that on this day Shani Dev’s energy is at its peak in the whole universe, which is why a puja done on Saturday reaches Shani Dev directly, and Shani Dev’s fierce and harsh effect is calmed at once. It is believed that Shani Dev holds the record of everyone’s karma, so the Shani Til-Tailabhishek and Shani Shanti Pujan done on this day not only give relief from Shani’s dasha, but also give relief from serious doshas formed by Shani’s position in the kundli. This calms the unexplained obstacles that come in life, and spoiled work begins to get done.

Why is til oil offered to Shani Dev?
It is said that when Maharshi Dadhichi gave up his body after donating his bones for making Vajra, the weapon of Devraj Indra, his wife left their 3-year-old son Pippalad and became sati. Pippalad suffered greatly in childhood because his parents had left him. When he grew up, Pippalad also became a great rishi. He came to know that he had to see this sorrow because of Shani’s gaze on his family.
Then he struck Shani Dev with his powers, because of which Shani Dev’s whole body was injured and he became very weak. Later, on Brahma Ji’s advice, Pippalad Rishi, who was kind by nature, became calm and applied oil on Shani Dev’s wounds, which gave him instant relief. Then Shani Dev gave a boon that anyone who offers oil to him will be freed from the troubles caused by Shani Doshas.

Why is the Shani Navgrah Temple in Ujjain so special?
According to legend, once in his pride, King Vikramaditya called Shani Dev cruel and smaller than the other Grahs. Angered by this, Shani Dev put Sade Sati on the king. By Shani’s effect the king lost his kingdom and had to wander from place to place. During this time, on a false charge of theft, his hands and feet were cut off. Going through this hard time, the king realized his mistake, gave up his pride and did true devotion and worship of Shani Dev. Pleased with Vikramaditya’s devotion, Shani Dev forgave him, due to which the king’s hands and feet were healed and he also got his kingdom back.
After being freed from Shani Sade Sati, out of gratitude, King Vikramaditya built this Navgrah Shani Temple at the Triveni Sangam, and, to stop the bad effects of the Grahs, installed them in the form of a Shivling. It is believed that after the building of this temple and Shani Dev’s grace, the “Vikram Samvat,” the base of Hindu time-counting, began.
