Kamakhya Tirth Kshetra: Where All Ten Mahavidyas Are Present!
In Sanatan Dharma and Tantra Shastra, the Kamakhya Tirth Kshetra (Guwahati) in Assam is considered the supreme capital of tantra and Shakti sadhana in the whole universe.
All ten Mahavidyas live together: The Kamakhya region is the only Siddh Tirth Kshetra in the world where the ten Mahavidyas (Maa Kali, Tara, Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Baglamukhi, Matangi and Kamala) sit in person in different Vigrahs and forms.
A very Jagrat Kaul-tantra region: According to the scriptures, when Maa Sati’s body was cut by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra, her womb and yoni part fell at this place. This region is considered the center of the origin of all Shaktis. It is believed that a tantrokt havan done here becomes Siddh at once.
9 November Somvati Amavasya: The Supreme Tantrik Importance for Shakti Sadhana
When the Amavasya tithi falls on a Monday, it is called “Somvati Amavasya.” Getting the puja done at the Kamakhya Dham on this day has special importance.
Monday is the day of Lord Shiv (Chandramauli), and Amavasya is the night of the meeting of Shiv and Shakti. Worshipping the Das Mahavidyas on this day is said to end mental stress, unexplained fear and depression. Pujan done on this day is said to burn away even the fiercest tantrik badhas and Grah Doshas.
The unfailing day for calming enemies: According to tantrik belief, the Maharatri of Amavasya is considered the most powerful for cutting through tantra-mantra.
The Legend of the Origin of the Das Mahavidyas
In Sanatan Dharma and the Shakta tradition, the Das Mahavidyas are a group of ten very powerful and knowledge-form manifestations of Adi Shakti (Mahasati/Parvati). According to the Bhagwat Puran and Mahabhagwat Puran, the main story of their appearance is linked to Lord Shiv and Mata Sati:
When Mahadev stopped Mata Sati from going to the yagya of her father, King Daksh Prajapati, because she had not been invited, and she stood firm in her stubbornness, Mata Sati became extremely angry, and seeing this, Lord Shiv began to run away from there. In her anger, ten terrible and divine forms, including Mahakali, appeared one after another from Maa Sati’s body. Wherever Lord Shiv went, those ten forms came in front of him. Mata stood in all ten directions and stopped him. Mata Sati made Mahadev realize that she was not an ordinary woman but the supreme Shakti of the universe, after which Lord Shiv gave her permission to go to the yagya.
These ten fierce forms of Mata Sati were called the “Das Mahavidya.” There is also a belief that to remove the terror of the very fearsome demon named Durgam and the crisis that had come on the Vedas, on the prayer of the Devtas, Maa Sati appeared as the Das Mahavidyas and destroyed him.
Form and Area of Work of the Das Mahavidyas
In Tantra Shastra and Shakta philosophy, the Mahavidyas are not just goddesses to be worshipped, but represent cosmic powers and the deep secrets of life:
Maa Kali: The goddess of time, destruction and supreme consciousness, who ends ego and the cycle of time.
Maa Tara: The guide of moksh and consciousness, who takes devotees across the ocean of fear and trouble.
Maa Tripura Sundari (Shodashi): The form of supreme beauty, love and cosmic energy.
Maa Bhuvaneshwari: The mother of this whole material world and nature.
Maa Chinnamasta: The goddess who cuts off her own head, showing that life and consciousness continue only through self-sacrifice.
Maa Bhairavi (Tripura Bhairavi): The power that destroys ignorance and fear through tapasya, fierce energy and inner heat.
Maa Dhumavati: The fierce power that destroys calamity, lack, poverty and enemies.
Maa Baglamukhi: The Brahmastra power that stops the speech, movement and evil thinking of enemies (stambhan).
Maa Matangi: The goddess of speech, music, art and tantrik knowledge (the tantrik Saraswati).
Maa Kamala: The tantrik Laxmi, who gives material prosperity along with spiritual splendor.
