Importance of the Ritual in Haridwar, the Moksh Nagri, on Somvati Amavasya
An Amavasya that falls on a Monday is called “Somvati Amavasya.” In the scriptures, Somvati Amavasya is considered as good as Pitru Paksha for tarpan, Shraddh and removing doshas of the ancestors. It is believed that on Somvati Amavasya, on the bank of the moksh-giving Maa Ganga, when Narayan Bali, Tripindi Shraddh and the milk abhishek of Maa Ganga are done, even ancestors who have wandered for hundreds of years become satisfied, give their descendants the blessing of happiness and prosperity, and depart for Vishnulok (Moksh).

Narayan Bali Puja: According to the Garud Puran, if an ancestor died an untimely death or his last wishes were left unfulfilled, he goes into the pret yoni. The Narayan Bali Puja, done on the Somvati tithi with Lord Shriman Narayan as witness, frees souls wandering because of untimely death, unwanted death or dissatisfaction from the pret yoni and sends them to Baikunth Dham.

Tripindi Shraddh: According to the Purans, when the ancestors of three continuous generations (father, grandfather, great-grandfather) are not satisfied, or when souls who died in childhood, youth or old age have not found peace, the Tripindi Shraddh satisfies the sattvik ancestors in Vishnu form, the rajasik ancestors in Brahma form and the tamasik ancestors in Shiv form, and removes the Pitru curse. Like Pitru Paksha, Somvati Amavasya is considered special for Pitru pujas.

Ganga Dugdh Abhishek: By doing the milk abhishek of Patit-Pavani Ganga Maiya for the uplift of the ancestors, the Pitru curse is burned away and lasting punya is received.
Why is the ritual special at the Ganga Ghat in Haridwar?
The literal meaning of Haridwar is “the door of Lord Vishnu (Hari).” After Narayan Bali Shraddh, the Ganga Ghat in Haridwar is considered the best place for tarpan and visarjan. According to the scriptures, the ritual gets special fruit from the calm, sattvik and spiritual energy of Patit-Pavani Maa Ganga, and by the mere touch of her holy Gangajal the departed soul receives supreme satisfaction. Here, for a person who died an untimely death, an artificial body (putla) is made of wheat flour or kusha and the final rites are done again by the scriptural method, which breaks all worldly bonds of the soul.
