Why is Kali Chaudas special? (The Secret of the Maharatri)

The Chaturdashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, that is Kali Chaudas, is considered in Tantra and the scriptures to be the most powerful Maharatri of the year.

The night of Mahakali’s appearance: According to beliefs, on this tithi Maa Kali appeared in her fierce form to destroy the Asurs and protect the world.

The time when the doors of the wheel of Kaal open: On the night of Kali Chaudas, cosmic energy is at its peak. On this night the powers of both Mahakali and Mahakal are most awake on Earth.

The unfailing time for removing untimely death: It is described in the scriptures that a puja done on the night of Kali Chaudas cuts even the punishment of Yamraj and the law of untimely death. Sadhana done on this night gives protection to the sadhak by saving them from being under the control of “Kaal” (time).

The Supreme Relationship of Purush and Prakriti (the Shiv-Shakti Story)
According to Tantra Shastra, when Maa Kali, while destroying the demons, came into a terrible fierce form, the three worlds began to tremble from her fierce speed and anger. It was not in the power of any Dev to calm her. Then, to save the world from destruction, Lord Shiv (Mahakal) himself lay motionless in Maa Kali’s path.
As soon as the fierce Maa Kali’s foot fell on Lord Shiv’s chest, she recognized her lord Mahakal, and out of shame her tongue came out. In this way Mahakal calmed the fierce form of Mahakali. Maa Mahakali is “Prakriti and Time,” while Mahakal is “Purush and Infinite Time.” Without Shiv, Shakti is uncontrolled, and without Shakti, Shiv is motionless. That is why both are worshipped together to win completely over untimely death.
