Glory of the Chhath Mahaparv
Chhath Mahaparv is the only festival of folk faith where arghya is given to the setting sun before the rising sun. This Mahaparv of Surya upasana and the worship of Devi Shashthi is celebrated on the Shashthi tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. On this festival, lakhs of Suhagin women, wishing for a son and long life for their children, do severe upasana of Chhathi Maiya, who appeared from the sixth part of the original Prakriti of creation. This is the only festival in which the setting sun is worshipped along with the rising sun. According to legend, Chhathi Maiya, the sixth part of Prakriti Devi and the manas putri (mind-born daughter) of Brahma Ji, is the goddess who protects children, gives them long life and brings happiness and prosperity to the family. It is said that on this Mahaparv, when arghya is offered to Surya Dev in the morning and evening with the water of Maa Ganga and Chhathi Maiya is worshipped, every obstacle in receiving the joy of children is destroyed and children receive the blessing of long life.

The Divine Glory of Chhathi Maiya
According to the Brahmavaivart Puran, there was a king named Priyavrat. Even many years after marriage, the king was very sad to have no child. Seeing the king’s sorrow, Maharshi Kashyap advised him to perform a Putreshti Yagya. On the sage’s advice the king had the yagya done. By the effect of the yagya, Maharani Malini gave birth to a son, but the child was born dead. Overcome by this terrible grief, King Priyavrat decided to give up his life and went to the cremation ground.

Just as the king was about to end his life, a very divine and radiant goddess appeared from the sky. The king folded his hands and asked the goddess who she was. The goddess said, “I am ‘Shashthi,’ the manas putri of Brahma Ji. Protecting the children of the whole world and giving children to the childless is my basic nature. Whoever worships me with devotion, I give them a good and long-lived child.”

Saying this, Devi Shashthi touched the dead child, and he came alive. King Priyavrat was extremely pleased and celebrated a grand festival of Devi Shashthi on Kartik Shukla Shashthi. That same Devi Shashthi came to be worshipped in the folk language as “Chhathi Maiya.”
