The Glory of This Divine Anushthan on the Kartik Purnima Mahatithi
According to the scriptures, Kartik Purnima tithi is considered one of the most sacred and fruitful Mahatithis of the year. On this day the Moon is complete with all its sixteen kalas and closest to the Earth, and its rays are considered nectar-like. It is believed that on the night of Kartik Purnima, 33 crore Devi-Devtas come from heaven to Earth themselves and light lamps on the ghats of Kashi, Mahadev’s city, to express the joy of their victory. It is said that on Dev Deepawali the Devtas are in a very happy mood, and in this very moment of joy they shower their grace and blessings on the people of Earth. It is believed that on this special tithi for the worship of both Shiv and Narayan, a Mahayagya done with the offerings of the Panchdevs at the Panch Ratna Temple in Kashi, the city of Mahadev himself, awakens the five pillars of life: knowledge, radiance, good health, wealth and moksh. Along with this, the 108 lamps offered in the stream of the holy, sin-cleansing Maa Ganga make the name of the devotee’s kul shine, and by removing the darkness of poverty and ignorance from life, light the flame of Aishwarya.
Divine Effect of the Panchdev Aishwarya-Prapti Mahayagya and 108 Ganga Deep Daan
In Sanatan Dharma, for the completeness of any work and all-round prosperity, there is a tradition of worshipping the “Panchdev,” that is Ganpati, Surya, Vishnu, Shiv and Shakti. It is believed that when these five powers are worshipped together through fire on the Mahamuhurat of Dev Deepawali, a balance of the five elements, that is earth, sky, air, fire and water, is established in a person’s life. In this, the blessing of wealth and grain, good health, peace of mind, a happy family and fame (kirti) is received, and it is believed that the sins of many lifetimes are destroyed. Along with this, the 108 deep daan at Assi Ghat makes the name of the devotee’s kul shine. It is said that this anushthan is very dear to Mata Laxmi and Kuber Dev. That is why the sadhak who does 108 deep daan on the night of Kartik Purnima has poverty uprooted from life, and new paths of wealth open.
The Legend of Kashi Dev Deepawali and Assi Ghat
According to the Shiv Puran and the Kashi Khand, in ancient times three fierce asur brothers named Tripurasur pleased Brahma Ji with severe tapasya and received three flying cities (Tripur). These Asurs spread tyranny in the three worlds and drove the Devtas out of heaven.
All the Devtas went to Lord Vishnu, and then on the advice of Shri Hari Vishnu, all the Devtas came to Moksh Nagri Kashi, to the shelter of Lord Shiv. On the day of Kartik Purnima, Lord Shiv killed Tripurasur with his unfailing arrow and freed the three worlds from his tyranny.
In the joy of victory over the Asurs and protection of the three worlds, Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and all 33 koti Devi-Devtas came down from heaven to Kashi, the city of Lord Shiv. They lit up the holy Ganga banks of Kashi (from Assi Ghat to Panchganga Ghat) with thousands of lamps and celebrated the victory festival. Since then this tithi of Kartik Purnima came to be called “Dev Deepawali.” It is believed that even today, on the night of Kartik Purnima, all the Devi-Devtas come to celebrate Deepawali in Kashi, Mahadev’s city. It is said that on this holy night, the deep daan and Panchdev Mahayagya done at Assi Ghat in Kashi are accepted by the Devtas in person, because of which the devotee’s home is filled with wealth, grain and prosperity.
