The Punya of Jyotirlinga Pujan on the Unfailing Muhurat of Somvati Amavasya
According to the scriptures, Monday is wholly dedicated to Lord Shiv. It is said that any anushthan done on Monday, the day most beloved to Lord Shiv, never goes in vain. When Amavasya also falls on a Monday, it is called Somvati Amavasya, which is considered a very fruitful tithi in the Purans.
On 9 November, the last Somvati Amavasya of this year, when a special Rudrabhishek with 21 dravyas is done at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 holy Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiv, it is believed that Shiv’s special grace showers on the devotee. On this Mahamuhurat, when 11,000 Panchakshari mantras are chanted along with the Rudrabhishek at Omkareshwar, the fourth Jyotirlinga, Lord Bholenath is said to be quickly pleased and take away even the biggest troubles of the devotee.

21 Dravya Rudrabhishek: The 21 Dravya Rudrabhishek is a grand and greatly auspicious anushthan of worshipping Lord Shiv. While an ordinary Rudrabhishek mainly uses 5 or 7 dravyas, in this special Maha-Abhishek the Shivling is given an abhishek with streams of 21 different holy liquids and herbs. Each dravya has a special scriptural importance: sugarcane juice gives growth of wealth, milk gives good health, honey destroys sins, Gangajal/Narmada jal gives moksh and peace, and bhasm gives protection.
11,000 Panchakshari Mantra Jaap: The Shiv Panchakshari mantra is considered the most powerful mantra in the universe. According to the scriptures, a fixed number is set for awakening the full energy of any mantra. For the Panchakshari mantra, this number is fixed at 11,000. It is believed that getting the fixed number chanted removes serious troubles in life quickly.

The Divine Glory of the Self-Manifested Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga was not made by anyone, but appeared on its own. According to the Shiv Mahapuran, once the Vindhyachal mountain heard Narad Ji praise Mount Meru. To prove himself greater than Mount Meru, Vindhyachal made a parthiv Shivling on the bank of the Narmada river and did severe tapasya of Lord Shiv. Pleased with Vindhyachal’s single-minded devotion and tapasya, Lord Shiv appeared in person and gave him the boon of fulfilling the work he wished for.
At that time the Devtas and rishi-munis also came there, and prayed to Mahadev to stay at that very place for the balance of creation and the welfare of the world. To fulfill this wish, Mahadev merged into the Shivling installed here in the form of jyoti.

How the Evening Rest Here Adds to Its Importance
It is believed that after traveling the three worlds, Lord Shiv rests here at night with Mata Parvati. Every day a special Shayan Aarti of the Lord is done here, and a chausar (dice game) is laid out in the sanctum. Many times, when the doors open in the morning, the dice are found moved from their place or scattered, which is considered proof of the presence of Shiv-Parvati in person. It is said that Shiv-Parvati plays chausar here.
