Glory of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।

उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥

Meaning: We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiv (the lord of the three worlds), who spreads the fragrance of life throughout the world and nourishes us. Just as a ripe melon is freed on its own from the bondage of the vine, in the same way may Mahadev free us from death and the bonds of the world, but not separate us from immortality.

According to Scriptures, Why Is the Mahamrityunjay Considered Unfailing?
According to the Shiv Puran, Rishi Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati had no children. After severe tapasya, Lord Shiv gave them the boon of a virtuous but short-lived son (with a life of only 16 years), “Markandey.” When Markandey turned 16 and Yamraj himself came to take his life, the child Markandey embraced the Shivling in Kashi and began an unbroken Mahamrityunjay mantra jaap.
Pleased with Markandey’s single-minded devotion, Lord Shiv appeared in person and forced Yamraj to step back. Mahadev gave Markandey the boon of immortality and said that any person who does pujan and abhishek with the Mahamrityunjay mantra at this holy place in Kashi will not be touched even by Yamraj, and will be free from untimely death.

According to the scriptures, Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiv. It is believed that any Shiv anushthan done on a Monday never goes in vain. For Shiv Manushthans, the importance of Mondays in the month of Kartik grows even more. According to the Purans, on a Monday in the month of Kartik, Lord Shiv modified the curse of Chandrama and gave him a place in his locks, after which he was called “Someshwar.” That is why the Somvaar fast and Shiv abhishek in the month of Kartik are considered especially important. In the scriptures, the Sava Lakh (1,25,000) Mahamrityunjay mantra jaap is considered the highest standard of mantra siddhi and a greatly auspicious anushthan. By the sava lakh jaap done by learned Brahmins, the cosmic Shiv-energy is awakened. After the jaap, the Dashansh Havan, done in the number of 10% (12,500 mantras) with herbs, gular, til, ghee and medicinal Samidhas, purifies the atmosphere and the devotee’s aura and destroys negative powers.

Importance of the Mahamrityunjay Temple in Kashi
In the scriptures, the fruit of an anushthan done at Siddh Tirth Kshetras is considered infinitely greater. The Mahamrityunjay Temple of “Kashi,” the city set on Lord Shiv’s trishul, is the supremely Siddh place where the self-manifested well (Amrit Koop) made by Lord Dhanvantari is present. It is believed that in this Jagrat region, the sound waves produced by the sava lakh Mahamrityunjay jaap and the Panchamrit Maha-Abhishek by learned priests destroy from the root all negative powers, illnesses and calamities from the devotee’s life. According to legends, this is the same place where Markandey Rishi did tapasya to defeat Kaal.
