The Legend of Tulsi Vivah (The Story of Sati Vrinda and Lord Vishnu)
According to the Vedic texts and the Padma Puran, in ancient times Devraj Indra and Guru Brihaspati were going to Kailash to see Lord Shiv. To test them, Shiv Ji took the form of a digambar (yogi) and blocked their path. Indra, in pride, insulted that yogi and tried to strike him with his vajra.
Angered by Indra’s pride, Lord Shiv opened his third eye. On Guru Brihaspati’s plea for forgiveness, Mahadev threw the fierce fire that came from his eye into the sea. From that radiance of Mahadev was born a mighty child, Jalandhar, to whom Brahma Ji gave the boon that no one except Mahadev could kill him.
Marriage to Vrinda and the Kavach of Invincible Power:
In time, Jalandhar was married to ‘Vrinda,’ a supremely devoted wife (pativrata) and an unshakable devotee of Lord Vishnu. Because of the power of Vrinda’s unbreakable pativrata dharma (satitva) and her hard anushthan, Jalandhar became completely invincible and began to behave like the rakshasas.
The proud Jalandhar not only conquered heaven, but also began demanding that Lord Shiv hand over Mata Parvati to him. Then angry Mahadev fought with him, but because of Vrinda’s satitva, even Lord Shiv was unable to kill the invincible Jalandhar.
Vishnu Ji’s deception: Then, to protect the Devtas and the universe, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and reached Vrinda’s palace. As soon as Vrinda, thinking him to be her husband, touched him (a stranger), her pativrata dharma was broken. As soon as her satitva was broken, all of Jalandhar’s powers ended on the battlefield, and Lord Shiv cut off his head from his body with the Sudarshan Chakra.
Vrinda’s curse: As soon as she learned of the deception, the angry Vrinda described this act of Lord Vishnu as being like a heartless stone and cursed him to become a stone. Honoring the curse of his devotee, Vishnu Ji became a ‘Shaligram’ stone, but in that very moment there was an imbalance in the universe. The Devtas pleaded with Vrinda to reduce her curse.
On the Devtas’ plea, Vrinda freed Lord Vishnu from the curse, and, with her husband’s severed head, became sati and was reduced to ashes.
Lord Vishnu’s repentance and the appearance of the holy Tulsi: Shri Hari Vishnu also repented of his mistake. He had to take this step because of Jalandhar’s deeds. Bowing to Vrinda’s holy satitva, Lord Vishnu gave a boon:
“O Vrinda! You will be dearer to me than even my consort Laxmi. My puja will remain incomplete without you, and every year on the Shukla Ekadashi of the month of Kartik (Dev Uthani Ekadashi), the devotee who gets your marriage performed with my Shaligram form, his Suhaag will always remain immortal, and he will receive supreme Moksh.”
The great punya of Kanyadaan: According to beliefs, any devotee who gets Tulsi Vivah done on Dev Uthani Ekadashi has the sins of many lifetimes erased, and receives the greatest punya, equal to Kanyadaan.
The Special Importance of Tulsi Vivah for Suhagin Women
In Sanatan tradition, Sati Vrinda is considered the supreme symbol of pativrata dharma and satitva. While Karwa Chauth is a vow of mutual love between husband and wife and a direct fast, Tulsi Vivah is a divine spiritual festival. On this day suhagin women offer Mata Tulsi a red chunari, sindoor, bangles and the 16 sixteen shringar, and perform her gathbandhan with Shaligram Ji. By this, Mata Tulsi is pleased and gives suhagins the blessing of Akhand Saubhagya, a long life for the husband and peace in the home.
The Glory of the Sava Man Shaligram Temple, Vrindavan
The “Sava Man Shaligram Temple” in Vrindavan is the only one of its kind in the whole world and a very wonderful temple. Here two huge Shaligram Vigrahs, each weighing about sava man (50 kilograms each), are installed. One is considered the direct form of Lord Vishnu, while the other is worshipped as the form of Sheshnag.
It is said that Vrindavan got its name from Maa Vrinda, because this was her tapasthali. In ancient times Tulsi plants were also found here in great numbers. That is why this region is considered a Dham where Lord Vishnu is in a very pleased mood and removes the troubles of devotees. By taking the sankalp of Tulsi Vivah in this holy Dham on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the direct boon of Lord Vishnu and Mata Laxmi is received.
